The one frustration I have here is that middle and lower mgmt can be doing all of this, but then it's their bosses going up to the VPs who do not. Those middle and lower mgmt will burn out fast. The question is how to get the upper mgmt to understand this. It's sad that the only time you hear from upper mgmt is when performance or a decision you made was not aligning with their expectations and they go by the "no news is good news" but shit... if you get news from them, you'll start looking for new opportunities elsewhere.

I agree with almost all of what Mr. Sinek proffered in this video. However, between time marks 2:00 and 2:25 he says (in essence) that if you are good at what you do, if you can do it better than others in your organization, that you will be promoted. Also he says that managers got their position because they already know how to do the "job". In 35 years spent in industrial engineering and related support trades, I found this to be a very rare exception to the rule. Most managers are in their position because they have a degree in business administration and or management, they are "bean counters", and rarely do they know how to do the actual "job", the work, of those whom they manage. Furthermore, if you work in technical trades similar to the ones I worked in, you will never become part of management for 1 primary reason. If you are very good at what you do, finding and taining a replacement would be very expensive and take too long. (Management is not going to find anyone with your level of training and experience to do what you do for what they are paying you.)

Thank you so much for this Simon! I started a dream job in a supervisor role and around that time was diagnosed with breast cancer. I started my job and a few weeks later , started 36 rounds of radiation therapy. They never trained me. I made a few mistakes at work, they put me on paid suspension 2 weeks into radiation for some nonsense reason. I was fired 2 weeks ago. Unbelievable. Cancer folks , cancer.

Leaders don't have empathy. In order to become a leader, they have to not care about what other people think and feel. Organizations cannot survive financially if they have empathy. A job, by definition, is slavery and coercion. If organizations buy what you're selling, they are only doing so as a performance for onlookers and to increase their stock price. Stop this. Stop commodifying empathy. Just teach people who are starving for it to give it and show them how they will receive it in return - but not at work. Empathy grows wild in the streets and in the neighborhoods and among the poor and the sad. Go there. Go to the margins. And give it away.

The front line people need to be Shown how to positively project. They are usually the least educated and have no people Skills. It's sad.

This is how I felt when I worked as a barista the managers never noticed the good but we're always there on my shoulder when I made a mistake. I remember when I missed the odd crumb under a chair an a duty manager actually took a photo to show the manager.... It's a fucking crumb. Same person that got me fired. That very week I was fired one of the duty manager that I kind of got on with divided to hand in there notice as they didn't agree which what the managers did to me. And the whole not admitting mistakes what's the same in that role. People were scared go admit them as the boss fired people so often. Like the manager fired a nice 18 yr old lad because he was hung over for the second time.... How many freaking times has the manager come in hungover.
